What Wiqd said (thanks Wiwd!). I don't know if there's a hard fast definition but Japanese RPGs traditionally tend to be more linear, with the player leveling up characters and advancing as a means to "revealing the story" rather than the potentially more 'sandbox-ish' Western RPGs, which often offer more options such as side quests or multiple ways to accomplishing something.

JRPG stands for Japanese RPG, which basically just means it uses the traditional japanese style of RPG over the American style. Examples of JRPGs would be Final Fantasy, Star Ocean, Dragonquest, etc. American RPGs are more along the lines of Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, etc.

For those of us perhaps not in the loop (and although I could certainly guess) what exactly is a "JRPG"? Thank you in advance for the clarification!
